Frictional Games is an independent game company founded in 2006 and registered in Helsingborg, Sweden. The small company has thus far specialized in survival horror games. They have created the Penumbra and Amnesia series as well as currently developing SOMA.

They started around 2006, originally releasing the Penumbra tech demo - a game to show off the capability of the company's engine, the HPL Engine - named after the initials of the author H.P. Lovecraft
